Walk-In Wardrobes: What You Need to Know
A walk-in wardrobe is more than a luxury — it's a system for organising your life. When designed properly, it reduces decision fatigue, protects your clothing investment and transforms the daily routine of getting dressed from a scramble into a calm, considered process.
Bear Brothers designs walk-in wardrobes and dressing rooms that work for your specific wardrobe. We plan hanging heights around your actual clothing lengths, drawer depths around your folding habits and shoe storage around the pairs you actually own — not theoretical averages.
We build walk-in systems for spaces of all sizes — from converting a small spare bedroom into a dedicated dressing room to fitting out a large master suite with full-height cabinetry, island units and seating.
Every component is manufactured in solid timber or high-grade plywood with soft-close drawers, integrated LED lighting and premium handles. The result feels like a high-end boutique, not a wardrobe showroom.
Why Generic Wardrobe Systems Fall Short
One-size-fits-none internal layouts
Pre-configured wardrobe systems assume everyone owns the same ratio of long dresses to short shirts. Your wardrobe is unique — your storage should be too.
Wasted vertical space
Most walk-in systems stop at 2.1m, leaving 30-60cm of usable height unused. Our full-height designs incorporate top-shelf storage for seasonal and occasional items.
Poor lighting
Without integrated lighting, walk-in wardrobes are dark caverns where you can't distinguish navy from black. Proper illumination is functional, not decorative.
Insufficient drawer provision
Generic systems prioritise hanging space over drawers. In reality, most people need more drawer space for folded items, accessories, underwear and seasonal pieces.
Quality that doesn't match the investment
A walk-in wardrobe is a premium feature — but off-the-shelf systems use melamine, wire baskets and plastic drawer runners that feel and perform like budget furniture.
How We Work
Wardrobe Audit & Survey
We measure your space and audit your actual wardrobe — counting hanging items by length, folded items, shoes, bags and accessories. This data drives the internal design.
Layout Design
We design the room layout for circulation, access and function. 3D renders show exactly how the space will look and work, including lighting positions.
Build
Carcasses in birch plywood, fascias in solid timber or spray-painted MDF. Drawers are dovetailed with Blum Legrabox runners. Hanging rails are oval chrome or matt black steel.
Finishing & Lighting
Interior LED lighting — strip lights in hanging sections, puck lights above shelves, drawer-activated lights. All wired into a single switch or door sensor.
Install & Organise
We install the complete system and can assist with the initial organisation — placing items in their designated positions so the system works from day one.
Why Choose Bear Brothers
Designed Around Your Wardrobe
Not a generic layout — hanging heights, drawer depths and shelf spacing matched to your actual clothing, shoes and accessories.
Full-Height Storage
Every centimetre from floor to ceiling is used. Top shelves for seasonal items, mid-level for daily wear, lower drawers for folded pieces.
Integrated Lighting
LED strip lights, shelf spotlights and drawer lights so you can see every item clearly — no more mismatched outfits.
Premium Feel
Solid timber, soft-close drawers, velvet-lined jewellery trays and full-length mirrors create a space that feels luxurious, not functional.
Protects Your Investment
Proper hanging, folding and shoe storage extends the life of quality clothing. Cedar-lined drawers protect against moths.
Adds Significant Property Value
A well-designed walk-in wardrobe or dressing room is a headline feature that increases both property value and selling speed.
Walk-In Wardrobe Configurations
L-shaped layouts work well in converted bedrooms, using two walls for hanging and storage while keeping the third wall clear for a full-length mirror and seating. U-shaped layouts maximise storage in larger rooms, with the option of a central island for drawers and jewellery storage.
Galley-style walk-ins suit narrow rooms — two facing walls of storage with a central aisle. We design for a minimum 900mm aisle width for comfortable access, though 1200mm is ideal.
For master suites, we can create a through-walk dressing room connecting bedroom to ensuite, combining wardrobe storage with laundry sorting and bathroom linen storage in one efficient flow.
Internal Components
Double-height hanging: short items (shirts, jackets, folded trousers) hung in stacked tiers doubles your hanging capacity per linear metre. Long hanging sections for dresses, coats and full-length garments are positioned separately.
Pull-out trouser racks, tie racks and belt hooks keep accessories visible and crease-free. Pull-out mirrors, ironing board stations and laundry hampers can be integrated into the system.
Shoe storage ranges from simple angled shelves to pull-out racks and glass-fronted display cases for valuable collections. We design around your shoe count and types — trainers need different storage from heels.
Converting a Spare Bedroom
You don't need a mansion for a walk-in wardrobe. A spare bedroom as small as 2m × 2.5m can be converted into a highly functional dressing room. We design the layout to maximise storage while maintaining a sense of space — using mirrors, lighting and open shelving to prevent the room feeling cramped.
If the spare room has a window, we position storage to preserve natural light and ventilation. Blackout blinds protect clothing from UV fading.
