Made to Measure Furniture: What You Need to Know
Not every project fits neatly into a category. Perhaps you need a window seat that doubles as storage, a radiator cover that looks like panelling, a bay window bookcase that follows the curve of the glass, or a dining bench built into an alcove. That's where made to measure furniture comes in.
Bear Brothers builds furniture to any specification for any room. We're not limited to standard products — if you can describe it and it's made from timber, we can design, build and install it. Every piece is one-of-a-kind, built to your exact measurements and finished to your taste.
This service is for clients who know what they want but can't find it — or who have a space so specific that only purpose-built furniture will work. We combine traditional joinery skills with modern CNC precision to create pieces that are both beautiful and structurally sound.
From a single statement piece to a whole-house furniture package, we approach every commission with the same attention to detail, the same quality of materials and the same commitment to getting it right.
Why 'Close Enough' Furniture Never Quite Works
The 20mm problem
Standard furniture is always slightly too wide, too narrow, too tall or too shallow. Those 20mm gaps between furniture and walls look minor in the showroom — and terrible in your home.
Compromise on function
Buying the closest available size means accepting the wrong drawer depth, the wrong shelf spacing or the wrong height. You adapt to the furniture instead of the furniture adapting to you.
Style mismatch
Your home has a specific architectural character — period mouldings, contemporary clean lines, rustic beams. Generic furniture from a catalogue introduces a visual language that doesn't belong.
Assembly quality
Flat-pack furniture uses cam-and-dowel construction designed for easy assembly, not longevity. These joints loosen with every house move and degrade with every year of use.
Environmental cost
Replacing furniture every 5–10 years because it falls apart or no longer fits is wasteful. One well-made piece lasts decades and reduces your environmental impact.
How We Work
Brief & Survey
We visit your home, measure the space and discuss what you need the furniture to do. We'll explore materials, styles and functional requirements together.
Design
We produce detailed drawings and 3D visualisations. You see the piece in your space before we build — and revisions are unlimited until you're happy.
Material Selection
Choose your timber species, finish and hardware from our samples. We'll advise on what works best for the function and environment of each piece.
Manufacture
Built in our Epping workshop using traditional joinery reinforced by CNC precision. Every joint is tested, every surface is hand-finished.
Delivery & Installation
We deliver, install and make final adjustments on site. Every piece is levelled, scribed and checked before we leave.
Why Choose Bear Brothers
Exact Fit, No Gaps
Measured to the millimetre and scribed to your walls, floors and ceilings. No filler strips, no gaps, no compromises.
Any Style
From Georgian panelled to industrial steel-and-timber, from Shaker simplicity to contemporary floating forms. We build in any style that suits your home.
Any Function
If it's made from timber and serves a purpose, we can build it. Window seats, radiator covers, bay window units, room dividers — no project is too unusual.
Sustainable Craft
One piece built to last 30+ years replaces three or four disposable alternatives. Our timber is FSC-certified and our finishes are water-based.
Personal Service
You deal directly with the makers from brief to installation. No salespeople, no subcontractors, no miscommunication.
5-Year Guarantee
Structural guarantee on every piece. If a joint fails or a mechanism breaks, we fix it at no cost.
Common Made to Measure Projects
Window seats with integrated storage are one of our most popular commissions. We build them to fit bay windows, straight windows and dormer recesses — with lift-up lids, drawers or a combination. Upholstered tops with removable cushions are available.
Radiator covers that integrate with room panelling or match existing cabinetry — with adequate airflow designed in, not bolted on. These transform industrial-looking radiators into architectural features.
Bay window bookcases and cabinets that follow the angles of a bay window, using every centimetre of the recess for book or media storage.
Freestanding statement pieces — dining tables, console tables, hall tables, benches — in any size, any timber and any style.
Working With Period Properties
London's housing stock spans centuries of architectural styles. We regularly build furniture for Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, 1930s Arts & Crafts houses and mid-century modern properties.
We can replicate any period moulding profile, match existing timber species and finish, and design proportions that sit correctly within the room's architectural grammar. The result is furniture that looks original to the house.
Whole-House Furniture Packages
For new-build homeowners, renovation projects and property developers, we offer whole-house furniture packages — co-ordinated designs across multiple rooms with consistent materials, finishes and design language. This includes kitchens, bedrooms, studies, living rooms and hallways.
Whole-house projects benefit from economies of scale in material purchasing and workshop scheduling. We manage the entire programme to align with your build or renovation timeline.
