Built-In Cupboards: What You Need to Know
Every London home has dead space — alcoves either side of chimney breasts, under-used hallway walls, wasted areas beneath staircases and gaps in bedrooms where freestanding furniture can't reach. Built-in cupboards turn these voids into high-capacity, beautiful storage.
Unlike freestanding units that leave gaps and collect dust, our built-in cupboards are scribed flush to walls, ceilings and floors. They look architectural — as if they were designed when the house was built — while providing precisely planned internal storage for whatever you need to organise.
We build cupboards for every room: living room media storage, hallway coat and shoe cupboards, bedroom linen closets, utility room storage and home office filing solutions. Each one is designed around what you actually need to store.
All cupboards are manufactured in our Epping workshop from solid timber and furniture-grade plywood, fitted with Blum soft-close hinges and finished to match your existing woodwork or create a new design statement.
What Happens Without Proper Built-In Storage
Clutter creep
Without dedicated, planned storage, belongings pile up on surfaces, in corners and in spare rooms. The visual noise creates stress and makes your home feel smaller than it is.
Wasted alcove space
Victorian and Edwardian terraces have alcoves designed for furniture that no longer exists. Leaving them empty or filling them with mismatched shelves wastes prime storage space.
Damaged walls from shelving
Freestanding bookcases and shelving units lean against walls, scuff paintwork and require wall anchoring that damages plaster. Built-in cupboards become the wall.
Reduced property value
Estate agents consistently report that well-designed built-in storage is one of the top features buyers look for. Generic flat-pack units do not add value.
Dust traps
Gaps behind and above freestanding furniture collect dust, allergens and lost items. Built-in cupboards are sealed to walls and ceilings, eliminating these traps entirely.
How We Work
Survey & Measure
We visit your home and measure every dimension — including out-of-square walls, uneven floors and ceiling heights. We photograph the space and discuss exactly what you need to store.
Design & Internal Planning
We design the cupboard externally to match your room's architecture and internally to hold your specific belongings — coats, shoes, files, linen, media equipment, whatever you need organised.
Manufacture
Built in our Epping workshop from birch plywood carcasses with solid timber doors and panels. Every component is precision-cut on our CNC router for a perfect fit.
Finishing
Hand-sprayed or brush-painted to your colour specification. We can match existing skirting boards, architraves and door styles for a seamless look.
Installation
Fitted on site by our own carpenters — scribed to walls, levelled on uneven floors and sealed at every edge. Typically completed in one day per unit.
Why Choose Bear Brothers
Architectural Integration
Designed to look original to your home — matching mouldings, proportions and paint colours so the cupboard appears to have always been there.
Maximum Storage Density
Internal layouts are planned around your belongings: adjustable shelves, hanging rails, drawer inserts and pull-out trays — not empty boxes.
Dust-Free Design
Scribed flush to walls and ceilings with no gaps. No more cleaning behind furniture or losing items in crevices.
Adds Property Value
Quality built-in storage is one of the top features buyers pay a premium for. It transforms a selling point, not just a storage solution.
Any Room, Any Shape
Alcoves, under stairs, hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms — we build for every space including irregular shapes and tight dimensions.
Soft-Close Everything
Blum hinges and runners on every door and drawer. No slamming, no wear, no adjustment needed for years.
Built-In Cupboards for Victorian and Edwardian Homes
London's Victorian and Edwardian terraces are full of architectural features that create natural recesses — chimney breasts with flanking alcoves, bay windows with side returns and deep hallways with unusable wall space. We design cupboards that celebrate these features rather than fighting them.
Door styles can match original Victorian four-panel or Edwardian two-panel designs. We replicate existing cornice profiles, use matching timber species and paint to your exact colour. The result is a cupboard that looks like part of the original house.
For listed buildings and conservation areas, we can work to heritage specifications and liaise with conservation officers where required.
Internal Configuration Options
We don't just build the box — we design the inside. Typical internal options include: adjustable shelving on brass shelf studs, full-extension drawers, pull-out shoe racks, hanging rails at multiple heights, file suspension rails, pull-out laundry hampers and integrated lighting.
For media cupboards, we include cable management channels, ventilation grilles and removable back panels for easy access to wiring. Adjustable shelves accommodate changing AV equipment over time.
Hallway and Utility Cupboards
Hallway cupboards are one of our most-requested projects. A well-designed coat cupboard with internal hooks, shoe storage and a shelf for hats and bags transforms a cluttered entrance into a calm, organised space.
Utility and boot room cupboards handle the practical storage that kitchens can't — cleaning supplies, pet food, bulk shopping, laundry baskets and outdoor gear. We design them for heavy daily use with wipe-clean interiors and durable handles.
