Bespoke Bookcases: What You Need to Know
A bookcase is the most personal piece of furniture in your home. It displays your interests, your history and your taste. A well-designed bookcase transforms a wall into a library — a badly designed one turns it into a cluttered shelf.
Bear Brothers builds bookcases for serious book lovers. We design around your collection — accounting for book heights (paperbacks, hardbacks, art books, vinyl records), display objects, lighting and the architectural character of your room.
We build alcove bookcases, full-wall library installations, study bookcases with integrated desks, and freestanding statement pieces. Every unit is manufactured from solid timber or furniture-grade plywood with adjustable shelving and architectural-quality finishing.
Whether you have 200 books or 2,000, we design storage that keeps your collection organised, protected and beautifully displayed.
Why Generic Shelving Fails Book Lovers
Fixed shelf heights
Standard bookcases have fixed or limited-position shelves. Your books don't come in standard sizes — art books, paperbacks, hardbacks and records all need different spacing.
Bowing shelves
Cheap shelving bows under the weight of books within months. Our shelves are supported at maximum 800mm spans with solid timber or plywood rated for the load.
Wasted wall space
Standard-height bookcases stop at 1.8m, wasting 40–60cm of wall height. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases use the full wall and make the room feel taller.
No design integration
A freestanding bookcase pushed against a wall looks like furniture. A built-in bookcase looks like architecture. The difference transforms the room.
Poor protection
Open shelving exposes valuable books to dust, UV light and humidity. We can incorporate glass-fronted sections and UV-filtering glazing for valuable collections.
How We Work
Collection Audit & Survey
We measure your wall and audit your book collection — heights, widths, categories and display objects. This data determines shelf spacing, depths and zones.
Design
We design the bookcase to fit your wall and your collection. 3D renders show the completed installation with books in place so you can visualise the finished room.
Build
Manufactured from your chosen timber with adjustable brass shelf studs, solid shelves rated for book weight and face frames that match your room's architectural style.
Finish
Painted, stained or oiled to your specification. Popular finishes include Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, Railings and custom colour-matching to existing room woodwork.
Installation
Fitted on site, scribed to walls, levelled and secured. Shelves are positioned to your collection layout and adjusted before we leave.
Why Choose Bear Brothers
Designed for Your Books
Shelf spacing calculated for your actual collection — paperbacks, hardbacks, art books, records and display objects each get the right space.
No Bowing, Ever
Solid timber or birch plywood shelves supported at maximum 800mm spans. Rated for the full weight of books without deflection.
Floor to Ceiling
Uses the full wall height, adding 30–50% more storage than standard bookcases while making rooms feel taller and more impressive.
Library-Quality Finish
Face frames, cornice mouldings, plinth details and ladder rails transform a bookcase into a library feature.
Adjustable Shelving
Brass shelf studs allow repositioning as your collection grows and changes. No fixed positions, no drilling.
Glass-Fronted Options
Protect valuable books from dust and UV light with glazed cabinet sections. Clear or low-iron glass available.
Bookcase Styles
Traditional library bookcases feature face frames, cornice mouldings, plinth bases and vertical divisions that create a formal, architectural appearance. These suit period properties and dedicated study rooms.
Contemporary bookcases use clean slab panels, shadow-gap details and floating shelf effects. Asymmetric divisions and varying shelf depths create visual interest without ornamentation.
Alcove bookcases are designed specifically for chimney breast recesses — typically with a combination of open shelving above and closed cabinets below for hidden storage.
Library Features
For full-wall or room-spanning installations, we can incorporate library ladders on rail systems — both functional and visually dramatic. Ladders are made from matching timber and run on stainless steel rail systems.
Integrated desk sections turn a bookcase wall into a complete study. The desk surface is set at ergonomic height with power, cable management and task lighting positions planned into the design.
Display lighting — LED strip lights above shelves or adjustable spotlights within the bookcase — transforms the unit from storage into a room feature, especially in the evening.
Materials and Book Protection
Oak is the traditional choice for library shelving — hard, stable and characterful. Walnut provides a richer, darker alternative. For painted bookcases, we use MDF cores with hardwood lippings for crisp, durable edges.
For valuable collections, we offer glass-fronted cabinet sections with UV-filtering glazing. Humidity-controlled sections are available for rare books and documents. Cedar or camphor wood backing panels provide natural insect protection.
