Bespoke Kitchens: What You Need to Know

A kitchen is the most-used room in your home and the single biggest factor in your property's value. Yet most kitchens are designed around standard carcass sizes, forcing you to live with filler panels, dead corners and layouts that fight against how you actually cook and entertain.

Bear Brothers builds kitchens that start from your space, not a catalogue. We measure every wall, pipe run and window reveal, then design cabinetry that wraps around your room's exact dimensions — eliminating wasted space and creating a layout that flows.

Every kitchen is manufactured in our Epping workshop from solid timber and furniture-grade plywood. We use traditional joinery for face frames and doors, with Blum soft-close hinges and Grass runners throughout. The result is a kitchen that feels, sounds and performs like the £40,000+ showroom kitchens — at a fraction of that price.

From a compact galley kitchen in a Hackney flat to a large island kitchen in a Cambridge family home, we design around how you live and cook — not how a factory stamps out standard units.

    Why Standard Kitchens Underdeliver

    Filler panels and dead corners

Off-the-shelf units come in fixed increments (300mm, 500mm, 600mm), leaving gaps filled with useless filler strips and corner carousels that jam within months.

    Chipboard carcasses

Most retail kitchens use 16mm melamine-faced chipboard. It swells around sinks, delaminates near ovens and can't hold heavy granite worktops without reinforcement.

    Generic layouts

Kitchen showrooms push standard L-shapes and U-shapes. If your room has a chimney breast, bay window or odd angles, you'll get an awkward compromise — not a solution.

    Short lifespan

The average fitted kitchen lasts 10–15 years before needing replacement. A well-built bespoke kitchen lasts 25–30 years with minimal maintenance.

    Hidden costs

Retail kitchen quotes often exclude fitting, worktops, appliance housing modifications and waste removal. The final invoice is frequently 30–50% higher than the showroom price.

    How We Work

    1

    Kitchen Survey & Brief

We measure your space in detail — including plumbing, electrics and extraction routes — and discuss how you cook, store food and entertain. We photograph everything so the design reflects reality, not assumptions.

    2

    Layout Design & 3D Renders

We produce scaled floor plans and photorealistic 3D renders showing cabinetry, worktop materials and lighting. You'll see your kitchen from every angle before we start building.

    3

    Timber Selection & Manufacture

Carcasses are built from 18mm furniture-grade birch plywood. Doors and frames are solid hardwood — oak, ash, tulipwood or painted timber. Everything is dowelled, glued and clamped for permanent structural integrity.

    4

    Finishing & Hardware

Doors are hand-sprayed or hand-painted to your colour specification. Hinges, runners and internal fittings are all Blum or Grass — soft-close as standard, with pull-out bins, spice racks and drawer organisers.

    5

    Installation

Our own fitters install the kitchen over 3–5 days depending on size. We co-ordinate with your worktop fabricator, plumber and electrician to ensure a seamless handover.

    Why Choose Bear Brothers

    Zero Wasted Space

Every unit is built to your room's exact millimetre measurements. No filler panels, no dead corners, no compromise layouts.

    25+ Year Lifespan

Solid timber doors and birch plywood carcasses outlast chipboard alternatives by decades. We build kitchens your children will inherit.

    Fixed-Price Transparency

Our quote includes design, manufacture, delivery and installation. No surprise extras, no 'fitting not included' footnotes.

    Any Style, Any Period

From Victorian in-frame Shakers to contemporary slab doors, we match any architectural style. We can replicate moulding profiles from period originals.

    Sustainable Materials

FSC-certified timber and water-based finishes as standard. We minimise offcuts through precise cutting lists and recycle all workshop waste.

    Full Design Service

3D renders, material samples and unlimited revisions before manufacture. You approve the final design — no guesswork.

    Kitchen Styles We Build

Shaker kitchens remain our most requested style — a five-piece door with clean proportions that suits both period and modern properties. We build authentic Shakers with mortise-and-tenon door joints, not routed MDF panels dressed up to look like solid timber.

In-frame kitchens use a face frame construction where doors sit inside the frame rather than overlapping it. This is the hallmark of high-end English kitchen making — and the reason our kitchens look and feel fundamentally different from retail equivalents.

For contemporary spaces, we offer handle-less push-to-open cabinetry, integrated appliance towers and waterfall island ends. Clean lines, shadow gaps and concealed storage create a minimal aesthetic that hides the complexity of a working kitchen.

    Materials and Construction Methods

Carcasses are 18mm birch plywood with solid timber front rails — stronger, lighter and more moisture-resistant than chipboard. We dado-groove shelves into sides rather than relying on shelf pins, creating a stronger, cleaner internal structure.

Doors are solid hardwood or MDF core with hardwood lippings for painted finishes. We never use vinyl-wrapped or foil-finished doors — they peel, crack and yellow within years.

All drawers are dovetailed or Blum Legrabox steel-sided with 40kg+ load capacity. Internal organisers, cutlery inserts and plate racks are custom-made to match the drawer dimensions exactly.

Small Kitchen and Galley Kitchen Solutions

London flats rarely have large kitchens, but smart design can transform a compact galley into a highly functional cooking space. We use full-height cabinetry, integrated appliance stacks and pull-out larders to maximise every vertical centimetre.

Island kitchens aren't just for large rooms. A narrow prep island with integrated storage and a breakfast bar can work in rooms as small as 3m × 4m when designed around the right clearances and door swings.
